The color falls somewhere between deep forest and bottle glass—and like all obsidian, it was made in seconds.
Green obsidian is volcanic glass: felsic lava that cooled so rapidly that no crystalline structure had time to form. The green coloration arises from trace minerals within the melt—typically iron or manganese compounds—distributed through the glassy matrix during the brief window between eruption and solidification. Obsidian has a conchoidal fracture, Mohs approximately 5 to 5.5, and a vitreous luster that makes polished surfaces appear almost wet. Green obsidian is less common than black obsidian; notable sources include Mexico and the western United States. Verification of natural green obsidian is worthwhile—green glass is a frequent substitute in the market.
Obsidian has been knapped into tools and blades since the Stone Age, prized for the extraordinary sharpness of its fractured edge. In the root, sacral, and heart chakra tradition, obsidian in any color is associated with grounding, clarity, and protection.
