A teardrop of deep red faceted garnet, hung in sterling silver.

Garnet is a silicate mineral group; the red varieties in jewelry are primarily almandine (iron-aluminum garnet) and pyrope (magnesium-aluminum garnet). Mohs hardness is 6.5–7.5, with no cleavage—the stone breaks conchoidally, not along flat planes, which means a faceted stone stays sharp and clear under daily use. This pendant sets a faceted teardrop garnet in solid .925 sterling silver. Significant deposits come from the Adirondack Mountains of New York, India, the Czech Republic, and East Africa.

Red garnet has been set in jewelry for more than five thousand years. Ancient Egyptian burials in the Nile Delta included garnet ornaments; Roman craft tradition favored it for inlaid rings and carved cameos. It is the traditional January birthstone and is associated in the chakra tradition with the root and heart chakras.
