Chatoyant gold and banded green—two minerals that together hold the eye.
Tiger’s eye is a pseudomorph of quartz after crocidolite asbestos—the original fibrous mineral structure is preserved in silica, producing the shifting, silky chatoyancy (cat’s-eye effect) visible when the stone moves in light. Mohs hardness 6.5–7. Major deposits are found in South Africa, Australia, and India. In Ancient Rome, soldiers wore tiger’s eye for courage; in Ancient Egypt it was linked to the sun god Ra. Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, Mohs 3.5–4, with characteristic banded green patterning formed by concentric growth rings. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
In the chakra tradition, tiger’s eye is associated with the solar plexus, sacral, and root chakras for confidence and grounding; malachite with the heart chakra for emotional balance and strength.
