Sunstone belongs to the feldspar family (oligoclase or orthoclase) and earns its name from the optical effect inside: hematite or goethite platelets in parallel alignment scatter light into a warm, glittering shimmer called aventurescence. Faceting each bead multiplies the effect—more flat surfaces, more angles for the platelets to return light. Mohs hardness 6–6.5. Oregon's Harney County and the gem fields of India and Norway are primary commercial sources.

In the chakra tradition, sunstone is associated with the solar plexus and sacral chakras—the energy centers of warmth, drive, and creative force. Ancient Greek sources connected a reddish feldspar to the sun god; Norse traditions describe the stone as a navigational aid used to locate the sun through overcast skies.
