Hold it at an angle and the interior lights up—not a trick of polish, but of physics.
Sunstone is a feldspar—oligoclase or sometimes orthoclase—containing flat platelets of hematite or goethite oriented in parallel layers within the crystal. When light enters the stone at the right angle, those platelets scatter it back in a glittering play called aventurescence. Mohs hardness 6–6.5. Major deposits come from Oregon, India, and Norway; Oregon sunstone, found in Harney County, is the state gemstone and is known for copper-colored inclusions unique to that locality.
The ancient Greeks associated a particular reddish feldspar with Helios, the sun god; Native American traditions in Oregon held sunstone as a sacred stone tied to the power of the sun and the blood of warriors. In the chakra tradition it is placed at the solar plexus and sacral centers.
A tumbled stone with genuine optical character—best evaluated in natural, raking light.
