Black, opaque, striated—a mineral that looks like it has already absorbed everything thrown at it.
Black Tourmaline, known in mineralogy as Schorl, is a boron silicate mineral in the complex Tourmaline group, Mohs 7–7.5. Its deep black color comes from high iron content in the crystal lattice. Schorl is the most abundant Tourmaline variety worldwide; major deposits are found in Brazil, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. This tumbled stone is polished to a smooth, slightly reflective finish, the natural striations visible along the long axis under direct light.
The stone takes its mineralogical name from the Saxon mining village of Schorl in Germany, where deposits were documented around the 1400s. It was later traded widely by the Dutch East India Company, though European mineralogists initially classified Schorl and Black Tourmaline as two separate minerals. In metaphysical tradition it is connected to the root chakra and to grounding and protective energy.
A pocket stone for the daily carry, or a starting point for a Tourmaline collection.
