A stone that is almost entirely carbon — matte black, dense, and older than the first animal life on Earth.
Shungite is a carbon-rich mineraloid found almost exclusively in the Karelian Republic of Russia, near the village of Shunga, from which it takes its name. The Karelian deposits are Precambrian, estimated at approximately 2 billion years old — predating complex multicellular life. Its carbon content ranges from about 30% in lower-grade material to nearly 98% in elite shungite, which contains fullerene-like molecular structures. The stone is opaque, with a dull to sub-metallic luster and a specific gravity notably higher than most common rocks. Peter the Great established Russia’s first mineral spa at Martial Waters in Karelia in 1719, where shungite-filtered spring water was documented as a resource.
In the chakra tradition, shungite is linked to the root chakra. Its historical association with water purification in Karelia has made it a grounding stone in metaphysical practice.
