Quartz that took millions of years of low-level irradiation to turn this color—and the color runs all the way through.
Smoky Quartz is quartz (SiO₂) colored brown to black by natural irradiation: gamma radiation from surrounding granite acts on aluminum impurity sites within the crystal lattice, creating color centers that absorb light in the amber-to-brown range. Mohs 7, the same hardness as all quartz varieties. The color is intrinsic—it is not a surface effect and does not fade under normal handling. Major sources include Brazil, the Swiss Alps, Colorado, and Scotland, where smoky quartz is the national gem and has been held in cultural regard since the time of the Druids.
In the chakra tradition, smoky quartz is placed at the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras—the lower axis associated with groundedness and stability. Ancient cultures across the Celtic world, China, and Egypt incorporated the stone into carvings and ritual objects.
A tumbled stone with genuine geological depth—the color is earned, not applied.
