Dark green stone with red markings—the pattern that gave it its name and its two thousand years of history.
Bloodstone is a dark green chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) with distinctive red spots caused by inclusions of iron oxide minerals—primarily hematite and jasper. Mohs 6.5–7. Major sources include India, Brazil, and Australia. The red inclusions appear in irregular patterns; no two tumbled stones carry the same distribution. This piece is tumbled to a smooth, matte-satin finish.
Medieval Christian legend held that Bloodstone was formed where the blood of Christ fell on dark green jasper at the foot of the Cross, making it a devotional stone worn by pious Christians throughout the Middle Ages. Druids used it in ceremonial contexts to ward off negative influences. It is associated in metaphysical tradition with the root and heart chakras and with grounding vitality and courage.
A pocket-sized stone with a history that spans two millennia of human use.
