The color lands between golden champagne and burnt amber—this is one of topaz's rarest natural expressions.
Imperial topaz is the golden-orange to orange-pink variety of topaz, an aluminum silicate fluoride (Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂), Mohs 8—hard enough to scratch quartz. The color arises from chromium and iron impurities within the crystal structure. Most blue topaz in the market has been irradiated; imperial topaz in this warm golden range is far less commonly subjected to color enhancement, though disclosure is always warranted. The classic locality is Ouro Preto, Brazil, where the finest specimens have been recovered since at least the nineteenth century; imperial topaz was originally restricted to the Russian royal family when discovered in the Ural Mountains.
Topaz is the traditional November birthstone. In the chakra tradition, imperial topaz is associated with the crown, solar plexus, and heart centers, and with creativity and clarity of focus.
A tumbled stone for the collector interested in topaz beyond the common blue variety—the natural golden range is harder to find and worth having.
