A perfect black sphere—opaque, cool, dense in the hand, the mineral's striations visible as faint lines in direct light.
Black Tourmaline (Schorl) is a boron silicate mineral in the Tourmaline group, Mohs 7–7.5, its black color produced by high iron content in the complex crystal structure. Polishing a sphere from Tourmaline requires navigating the mineral's natural cleavage planes; the finished sphere reveals the stone's internal striations across its surface under raking light. Major sources are Brazil, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Named for the Saxon mining village of Schorl, documented in the 1400s, Black Tourmaline was later popularized in European trade by the Dutch East India Company. Ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Indigenous cultural traditions used the stone in ceremonial and protective contexts. In metaphysical practice it is linked to the root chakra and to grounding, shielding, and the absorption of disruptive environmental energy.
A display sphere that doubles as a working stone—substantial enough to anchor any collection.
