Burnt orange that intensifies in sunlight—the color of iron in motion.
Carnelian is chalcedony—cryptocrystalline quartz—colored orange to red by dispersed iron oxide throughout its microcrystalline structure. The tone ranges from pale peach through deep amber-red depending on the concentration and oxidation state of the iron. This oval cabochon is set in solid .925 sterling silver, the smooth surface polished to a warm, even sheen. Mohs 6.5–7.
Among the oldest worked gemstones on record, carnelian was fashioned into jewelry and amulets by the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians, buried with the dead to accompany the crossing, and carried as protection by the Persians, Greeks, and Babylonians. In the sacral chakra tradition it is linked with creativity, courage, and motivated action.
A ring that reads quiet in shade and comes alive in direct light.
