Fluorite is calcium fluoride, Mohs 4, with a cubic crystal structure that produces banding and color zoning in purples, greens, and blues—major deposits in China, Mexico, and South Africa. Tiger eye is a pseudomorph: crocidolite asbestos fibers replaced by quartz while retaining the fibrous structure, producing chatoyancy—the shifting silken band that moves across the surface in light. Amethyst is iron-bearing quartz whose violet deepens where crystals grew slowest; the traditional February birthstone, it has been used in meditation traditions for centuries.
