Garnet is a nesosilicate mineral group. The red varieties most common in specimens are almandine, which crystallizes in the isometric system and often forms the distinctive 12-faced rhombic dodecahedron that collectors recognize: a perfectly regular, many-sided crystal that looks cut but is not. Mohs hardness is 6.5–7.5. This raw form shows the natural crystal habit rather than a lapidary cut. Major deposits of red almandine garnet come from the Adirondack Mountains of New York, India, and the Czech Republic, where it occurs in metamorphic schists and gneisses.

Red garnet was among the first gemstones worked by ancient lapidaries—Egyptian craftsmen set it more than five thousand years ago, and Roman signet rings frequently used garnet inlay. In the chakra tradition it is linked to the root and heart chakras.
