The color is olivine green—the specific shade that forms forty miles below the surface and comes out unchanged.
Peridot is the gem-quality variety of olivine ((Mg,Fe)2SiO4), a mineral that crystallizes in the Earth's upper mantle under high pressure and temperature. Its vivid yellow-green is produced by iron in the crystal structure—an intrinsic color that no post-formation process alters. This faceted stone is cut into a heart shape and set in solid .925 sterling silver; the facets are designed to maximize the stone's strong luster and the way it handles light.
Among the oldest documented gemstones, peridot was mined by ancient Egyptians on the island of Zabargad from at least 1500 BCE. The stone is also found in volcanic basalts and, occasionally, in pallasite meteorites—one of the few gems with an extraterrestrial occurrence. In the chakra tradition it corresponds to the heart and solar plexus chakras.
A ring for everyday wear—the heart setting makes the stone the focus while the cut does the work.
