Selenite is a variety of gypsum — calcium sulfate dihydrate, Mohs 2 — that formed in ancient evaporite basins where concentrated mineral water slowly crystallized. Its softness makes it ideal for engraving; its flat cleavage planes make it naturally suited to a plate form. The zodiac wheel engraved here runs all twelve signs in sequence, the incised lines catching the stone’s characteristic light. The plate is flat-bottomed and stable on any surface. Selenite is water-soluble over prolonged contact; do not submerge or clean with water.

In crystal tradition, selenite plates are used to rest and display other stones — the soft glow of the gypsum makes any stone placed on it look better. In the chakra tradition, selenite is associated with the crown and third-eye chakras and with clearing energy. The zodiac engraving ties the piece to astrological tradition, a practice that runs continuously from ancient Mesopotamia to the present.

Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO&sub4;·2H&sub2;O), Mohs 2, with a distinctive fiber-optic luminescence and a silky, striated cleavage surface. It is one of the few minerals that is not itself piezoelectric yet is consistently used to reset the energy field of other stones in lapidary tradition. White sage (Salvia apiana) is native to the coastal sage scrub of Southern California and Baja; it has been burned as a purifying smoke in Indigenous North American ceremonies for documented centuries.
