Black Tourmaline (Schorl) is a boron silicate, Mohs 7–7.5, and a genuinely piezoelectric and pyroelectric mineral: it generates an electric charge under mechanical pressure and temperature change, a property applied in pressure gauges and other scientific instruments. Its black color reflects high iron content. The point form is cut along the crystal's natural prism axis; the striations run parallel to the length.

Named for the Saxon village of Schorl, Germany, and traded across Europe by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th and 18th centuries.
