Turn it in the light and a single band of gold moves across the surface—that is chatoyancy, and it belongs to this stone alone.
Tiger Eye is a quartz pseudomorph: crocidolite asbestos fibers are replaced atom by atom by silica and iron oxides, but the fibrous structure remains. It is that preserved fiber that catches and focuses light into one travelling ray. Mohs hardness 6.5–7. Most commercial material comes from South Africa's Northern Cape province, where seams of tiger eye run through ancient metamorphic rock.
In the chakra tradition, tiger eye is linked to the solar plexus, sacral, and root centers—the axis of confidence, drive, and physical grounding. The Romans and ancient Egyptians both held the stone in regard; Egyptian funerary art occasionally features it as a stand-in for the divine eye.
A palm stone sized to sit across the hand—the chatoyancy is best seen at arm's length, tilted slowly toward light.
