Fluorite is calcium fluoride (CaF²), a halide mineral with Mohs hardness of 4 and perfect octahedral cleavage, meaning it has four planes along which it cleaves cleanly if struck or stressed. Carving a detailed form from fluorite requires working around those cleavage directions throughout the sculpting process. Color in fluorite—green, purple, blue, colorless—comes from trace impurities and structural defects in the crystal lattice; an angel carved from banded fluorite shows the color zoning in the wing surfaces and body folds. Major deposits include China, Mexico, and the Illinois Fluorspar District.

Fluorite's name derives from the Latin fluere—to flow—from its use as a smelting flux. In ancient China and Rome, fluorite was shaped into ornamental objects and often mistaken for jade. In the chakra tradition it is linked to all chakras and to focus and mental calm. The angel form is a long-standing motif in lapidary carving, made to stand on a shelf or desk.
