Hematite is iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), Mohs 5 to 6, with a naturally high metallic luster that faceting amplifies to near-mirror quality. Faceted hematite microbeads catch and redirect light in a way no smooth bead can replicate, producing a rippling, silvery effect along the strand. Despite its dense, heavy character when handled as a sphere or large piece, microbead sizing lightens the necklace considerably. Brazilian and Australian deposits supply most commercial hematite lapidary material.

Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO&sub4;·2H&sub2;O), Mohs 2, with a distinctive fiber-optic luminescence and a silky, striated cleavage surface. It is one of the few minerals that is not itself piezoelectric yet is consistently used to reset the energy field of other stones in lapidary tradition. White sage (Salvia apiana) is native to the coastal sage scrub of Southern California and Baja; it has been burned as a purifying smoke in Indigenous North American ceremonies for documented centuries.
