Warm orange-red and smooth in the hand, the heart shape lets the color fill your palm.
Carnelian is a translucent to opaque variety of chalcedony—microcrystalline quartz—colored orange to red by dispersed iron oxide (hematite and goethite) within the silica matrix. The color ranges from pale amber-orange to a deep burnt sienna depending on iron content and distribution. Mohs 6.5–7, with a waxy to vitreous luster when polished. Most commercial carnelian is heated to intensify the color; the color change is stable and a long-standing trade standard. This piece is hand-carved and polished into a heart form.
Carnelian is one of the oldest adornment stones in the archaeological record. Sumerian and Egyptian craftsmen fashioned it into amulets, seals, and jewelry as far back as the fourth millennium BCE. The Egyptians included carnelian among the funerary stones placed with the dead. In the chakra tradition it is placed with the sacral chakra and associated with creativity, courage, and vitality.
A pocket stone or display piece for anyone drawn to warm earth tones. The heart form holds naturally in one hand.
