The green of deep mantle rock, held in the palm—peridot is one of the few gems that forms below the crust.
Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium iron silicate ((Mg,Fe)2SiO4) that crystallizes in the upper mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic activity or in xenoliths carried by basaltic magma. Its vivid yellow-green color is an intrinsic property of the iron in its crystal structure—the color is built into the mineral's chemistry and cannot be altered by any post-formation process. Mohs hardness 6.5—7. This piece is shaped and polished into a palm stone with a flat base.
Peridot was mined on the Egyptian island of Zabargad (Topazios) as early as 1500 BCE; Egyptian records suggest the locality was closely guarded. The San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona remains one of the world's significant peridot sources today. In the chakra tradition it is linked to the heart and solar plexus chakras.
A palm stone for a desk or collection—and one of the only gems you can hold that formed in the Earth's mantle.
