The golden ray that crosses this stone is not painted on—it is built into the mineral's architecture.
Tiger Eye begins as crocidolite: a fibrous, blue asbestos mineral. Over geologic time, silica and iron oxides replace the original fibers while preserving their alignment. The result is a quartz pseudomorph whose internal structure catches light into a single moving band, the optical effect called chatoyancy. Mohs hardness 6.5–7. Primary deposits are concentrated in South Africa's Northern Cape, with additional sources in Western Australia and India.
In the chakra tradition, tiger eye is placed at the solar plexus, sacral, and root chakras—centers associated with drive, vitality, and physical presence. Ancient Roman soldiers are documented to have worn the stone in battle as a talisman of courage.
