Deep red quartz-hard stone set in a round silver band.
Garnet is a mineral group, not a single species—almandine (iron-aluminum) and pyrope (magnesium-aluminum) are the dark red varieties most commonly set in jewelry. Mohs hardness runs 6.5–7.5 depending on the variety; garnet has no cleavage, so it fractures conchoidally rather than in flat planes, which contributes to its durability in a ring setting. This stone is set in solid .925 sterling silver in a faceted round. The largest documented deposits of gem-quality garnet are in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, with significant additional sources in India, the Czech Republic, and East Africa.
Red garnet is among the oldest gemstones in continuous use. Egyptian jewelry from the Nile Delta carries garnet as early as 3000 BCE; Roman officers and soldiers wore garnet-inlaid signet rings and sword hilts. The stone is traditional for January and associated in the chakra tradition with the root and heart chakras.
A ring that reads as quiet authority—not flashy, but a color and hardness that holds up to daily wear.
