Solid, heavy, and deeply black—a sphere that has real weight in the palm.
Black tourmaline (schorl) is a sodium iron aluminum borosilicate belonging to the tourmaline supergroup. Its dense black color comes from a high iron content, and its opacity sets it apart from the colored transparent tourmaline varieties. Formed primarily in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, schorl is the most common tourmaline species and one of the most widely distributed minerals on Earth. This piece has been precision-ground into a sphere and polished to a high gloss that reveals the mineral's vitreous luster. Mohs 7–7.5.
Black tourmaline was known in Europe as Schorl, named for a village in the Erzgebirge region of what is now Germany where it was mined extensively. The Dutch East India Company traded it widely in the eighteenth century. In the chakra tradition, black tourmaline is associated with the root chakra and regarded as a grounding and protective stone.
A display sphere for a shelf or desk. The weight and density of the material give it a presence that lighter spheres lack.
