Cut the sphere and you would find concentric rings—banding laid down one mineral layer at a time.
Malachite is copper carbonate hydroxide—Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂—Mohs 3.5–4, forming in the oxidation zones of copper deposits through the reaction of copper-bearing solutions with carbonate. Its concentric banding marks each episode of mineralization, producing the eye-pattern and striated surfaces that make polished malachite immediately recognizable. This sphere is turned and polished from a solid malachite block, the circular cut exposing banding in cross-section at every angle.
Malachite has been worked as an ornamental stone for over 6,000 years, documented in Egyptian, Hopi, and Navajo craft traditions. In the chakra tradition it is associated with the heart and solar plexus chakras and linked in practice to protection and compassion.
A display sphere that rewards close attention—no two banding patterns are the same.
