Faceted smoky quartz drops that shift from nearly clear to deep tobacco brown depending on the light.
Smoky quartz is silicon dioxide colored grey-brown to near-black by natural irradiation from radioactive elements in the surrounding host rock, which displaces silicon atoms in the lattice and creates color centers that absorb light. The color ranges from pale grey (citrine-smoky blends) through warm cognac to deep Cairngorm brown. It forms in granitic pegmatites and hydrothermal veins worldwide. Mohs 7, with excellent transparency and vitreous luster. Set in solid .925 sterling silver with a faceted cut that draws out the depth of the color.
Smoky quartz is the national gemstone of Scotland, where the dark material from the Cairngorm Mountains has been used in Highland jewelry since at least the eighteenth century. In the chakra tradition it is associated with the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras and regarded as a grounding stone.
Drop earrings for anyone who reaches for smoky neutrals—the brown-grey tone pairs with virtually every color palette.
