Pink at the center, green at the rim—the color zoning visible through the facets like a cross-section of fruit.
Watermelon tourmaline is a color-zoned elbaite tourmaline in which the core of the crystal grows pink or red (from manganese) while the outer zone grows green (from iron), producing the characteristic concentric color pattern. This zoning develops as trace element concentrations shift in the surrounding pegmatitic fluid during crystal growth. The faceted cut cross-sections the crystal, putting both zones on display simultaneously. Set in solid .925 sterling silver. Mohs 7–7.5.
Tourmaline was first officially described by a mineralogist in Maine in 1902, and the Erzgebirge legend holds that tourmalines passed through a rainbow to gain their colors—the multicolored varieties, watermelon especially, are the most cited examples. In the chakra tradition, watermelon tourmaline is associated with the heart and sacral chakras and regarded as a stone of playfulness and companionship.
Statement earrings for the collector who appreciates natural color phenomena in gemstones. Each pair will show slightly different color distribution.
