Warm iron-orange, carved into the oldest form in the lapidary tradition.
Carnelian is chalcedony—cryptocrystalline quartz—whose orange-to-red color comes from iron oxide distributed through its microcrystalline fiber structure. The saturation and hue vary from stone to stone depending on the iron's oxidation state, which is why no two carnelian hearts read exactly the same. Mohs 6.5–7. This piece is hand-carved and polished, its surface smooth and domed.
Carnelian has been carved into ornamental and ceremonial forms since Sumerian and Egyptian antiquity, buried with the dead and worn by the living as a protection stone across the Persian, Greek, and Babylonian worlds. In the sacral chakra tradition it is associated with creativity, courage, and the energy to act on intention.
