A crescent cut from translucent gypsum — the oldest moon symbol in a material named for the moon.
Selenite is gypsum — calcium sulfate dihydrate, Mohs 2 — that crystallized in ancient evaporite basins as mineral-dense water slowly disappeared over geological time. Its inner luminescence comes from a molecular structure of flat, parallel sheets that transmit rather than scatter light. This bowl is carved into the crescent moon form and hollowed, the interior polished, the walls thin enough to glow. The name selenite derives from Selene, the Greek personification of the moon — a connection between stone and symbol that runs continuously for more than two millennia. Do not submerge in water; gypsum is soluble.
In the chakra tradition, selenite is associated with the crown and third-eye chakras. The crescent moon has been a devotional symbol across Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Islamic, and Wiccan traditions. Together, the form and the material reinforce each other.
A display bowl for a bedside table, altar, or windowsill — works best where it can catch some light.
