Selenite is gypsum — calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO⊂4;·2H⊂2;O) — formed in evaporite basins where ancient seas concentrated their mineral content and slowly crystallized over millions of years. Its softness (Mohs 2) is what allows carvers to work the detail of wings and drapery into a compact form. The stone’s translucency means the finished figure appears almost lit from within — not a flat white, but a glow that shifts with the angle of light. Keep dry and away from water; gypsum is soluble.

The ancient Greeks named this mineral for Selene, the moon goddess; the Romans incorporated selenite into temple decorations for its luminous quality. In the chakra tradition, selenite is associated with the crown and third-eye chakras and with connection to higher awareness. The angel form has been carved in devotional and protective traditions across Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Judaic mysticism.

Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO&sub4;·2H&sub2;O), Mohs 2, with a distinctive fiber-optic luminescence and a silky, striated cleavage surface. It is one of the few minerals that is not itself piezoelectric yet is consistently used to reset the energy field of other stones in lapidary tradition. White sage (Salvia apiana) is native to the coastal sage scrub of Southern California and Baja; it has been burned as a purifying smoke in Indigenous North American ceremonies for documented centuries.
