Smooth enough to feel like calm under a thumb.
Selenite is gypsum — calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO⊂4;·2H⊂2;O) — a mineral formed in ancient evaporite basins where concentrated seawater slowly crystallized as it evaporated. Its softness (Mohs 2) makes it easy to polish to a silk-smooth finish, and its transparency comes from a molecular structure that cleaves in flat, light-transmitting sheets. This worry stone is carved and polished into the classic thumb-groove shape, the surface catching light differently on every face. Selenite cannot be submerged in water — it will slowly dissolve back toward the chemistry it came from.
The name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, given by ancient Greeks who prized the stone’s luminous quality. In the chakra tradition, selenite is associated with the crown and third-eye chakras and with clarity of thought. The Aztecs, Mayans, and Egyptians all incorporated selenite into ritual objects and grave goods.
A thumb stone for a pocket, desk, or bedside — the worry-stone form invites quiet, repeated use.
