Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl—beryllium aluminum silicate—colored by trace ferrous iron (Fe²⁺). It forms in granitic pegmatites and hydrothermal veins, typically in well-developed hexagonal prisms. Mohs 7.5–8, with vitreous luster and good transparency. The color ranges from pale sky blue to a more saturated sea blue-green; most commercial aquamarine has been heated to 400–450°C to remove greenish tones and produce a cleaner blue.
