A blue opal cabochon set in solid .925 sterling silver.
Opal is hydrated silica—a non-crystalline mineraloid that can hold up to a fifth of its weight in water. This blue variety, much of it from the Andes of Peru, is a common opal: it carries a soft, milky blue-green from traces of copper minerals rather than the flashing play-of-color of precious opal. The color runs evenly through the stone, cut and polished to a smooth domed cabochon and set in a simple silver bezel.
Opal has been prized since antiquity—the Romans ranked it among the most valuable of gems, and a Greek myth held that opals formed from the tears of Zeus after his battle with the Titans. Because of its water content opal is softer than quartz (Mohs 5.5–6.5) and sensitive to heat and dryness; keep it from harsh chemicals and prolonged dry heat.
