A cross-section that shows the stone's full banding in a single plane.
Malachite is copper carbonate hydroxide—Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂—Mohs 3.5–4, its concentric bands formed by successive episodes of copper mineralization in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits. Cutting the stone as a slice rather than a sphere or freeform reveals the banding pattern in its fullest expression: eye patterns, concentric arcs, and wavy striations laid out in a single readable plane. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Russia.
Malachite's history as an ornamental stone spans at least 6,000 years. In the chakra tradition it is associated with the heart and solar plexus chakras and linked in practice to protection, compassion, and positive energy.
A slice that works as display or as a study in mineral layering—best shown face-forward where the full pattern is visible.
